The Core Four Universal Safety Rules
Treat Every Firearm as Loaded: Always assume a firearm is ready to fire. Visually and physically inspect the chamber yourself whenever you pick up or receive a gun.
Control Your Muzzle at All Times: Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. Keep the barrel directed toward a designated safe area downrange or into a safe backstop.
Practice Finger Discipline: Keep your index finger extended straight along the frame, completely outside the trigger guard, until your sights are aligned on target and you have made the conscious decision to shoot.
Confirm Target and Background: Know your target, what is around it, and what lies beyond it. Never shoot without knowing where your round will land if it passes through or misses.
Essential Range Safety Protocols
Wear Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear ANSI-rated eye protection and proper hearing protection before stepping onto an active range floor.
Obey Range Commands: Follow all instructions from Range Safety Officers (RSOs) immediately. When a “Ceasefire” is called, immediately set down your firearm, step back from the bench, and keep your hands clear.
Match Ammunition Correctly: Only use factory ammunition that precisely matches the caliber stamped on your firearm’s barrel. Never use damaged or improper rounds.
Handle Malfunctions Safely: If a cartridge fails to fire when the trigger is pressed, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction downrange for at least 30 seconds before cycling the slide to clear the round.
Never Rely on Mechanical Safeties: Safeties are mechanical devices that can fail. Always rely on strict handling discipline rather than a switch or lever.
Safe Storage and Transport Practices
Secure Storage: Store all firearms unloaded in a heavy-duty locked safe or gun lockbox. Store ammunition in a separate locked compartment away from children and unauthorized persons.
Compliant Transport: Transport firearms unloaded and enclosed in secure, locked cases in compliance with local regulations.
