The Brent’s Pistols Marksmanship & Safety Manual
Acquiring a high-performance sidearm is only the first step toward personal defense and marksmanship. True precision requires mastering essential handling protocols, mechanical principles, and shooting fundamentals. This guide provides a foundation for safe operation, accurate shot placement, and proper maintenance.
1. Universal Firearm Safety Rules
Safety is the absolute cornerstone of responsible firearm ownership. Adhere strictly to these four mandatory rules at all times:
Treat Every Firearm as Loaded: Always verify the chamber visually and physically upon taking control of any firearm. Never assume a gun is clear.
Maintain Strict Muzzle Control: Point your barrel only in a direction where an unintended discharge cannot cause injury or property damage.
Index Your Trigger Finger: Rest your index finger straight along the frame above the trigger guard until your sights are aligned on target and you have made the conscious decision to shoot.
Confirm Target & Background: Identify your intended target with absolute certainty and ensure there is an effective bullet trap or safe backstop behind it.
2. Core Fundamentals of Handgun Marksmanship

The Modern Support Grip (Thumbs-Forward)
A high, firm grip is vital for recoil management and tracking your sights during rapid fire.
Dominant Hand: Seat the web of your hand as high as possible into the frame’s beavertail. Wrap your middle, ring, and pinky fingers firmly around the front strap.
Support Hand: Rotate your support palm forward into the empty space on the grip panel. Wrap your fingers over your dominant hand’s fingers, keeping both thumbs pointed forward parallel to the barrel.
Pressure Balance: Apply ~60% grip pressure with your support hand and ~40% with your dominant hand to keep your trigger finger relaxed for precise manipulation.
Athletic Stance & Body Alignment
Establish an active, stable platform to absorb kinetic energy:
Position feet shoulder-width apart, with your dominant foot slightly behind your support foot.
Bend your knees slightly and lean your upper body forward from the waist to drive weight into the firearm.
Extend both arms out toward the target, locking your wrists while keeping your shoulders relaxed.
Sight Alignment & Sight Picture
Sight Alignment: Center the front sight post inside the notch of the rear sight, ensuring top edges are level with equal light gaps on both sides.
Sight Picture: Place your aligned iron sights onto the target center. Focus sharply on the front sight post; both the rear sight and target will appear slightly out of focus.
Red Dot Optics: For pistol-mounted red dots, remain target-focused with both eyes open and superimpose the illuminated reticle over your target center.
Trigger Control & Follow-Through
Position the pad of your index finger naturally across the center of the trigger shoe.
Press the trigger straight rearward with continuous, smooth pressure without disturbing your sight picture.
Follow-Through: Hold the trigger back momentarily after the shot breaks. Ease the trigger forward only until you hear and feel the mechanical reset, readying the system for follow-up shots.
3. Routine Inspection & Maintenance Workflow
Regular maintenance ensures mechanical reliability and long service life.
| Phase | Steps | Focus Points |
| 1. Unload & Clear | Remove magazine $\rightarrow$ Lock slide back $\rightarrow$ Inspect chamber | Verify zero live ammunition in work area. |
| 2. Field Strip | Separate slide, barrel, recoil spring assembly, and frame | Follow factory owner manual breakdown steps. |
| 3. Clean | Solvent scrub barrel bore, slide rails, and breech face | Remove carbon deposits, lead, and brass residue. |
| 4. Lubricate | Apply high-grade firearm oil to high-friction slide contact points | Light film on barrel hood, frame rails, and locking block. |
